Preparation for video Colonoscopy

Be sure to follow each step and complete all instructions or the entire examination may have to be repeated.

Two days of Clear Liquids Prior to Examination.

Examples of Clear Liquids Include:

   Jell-O, Broth, Tea, Coffee without Cream, Kool-Aid, Popsicles, and Juices:
   Apple, Grape, Cran-apple, Cranberry, Gatorade, 10 K

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK
Orange juice, Grapefruit juice, Pineapple, Tomato juice, Watermelon, Ice Cream, Yogurt, or Sherbet

A high fluid intake is essential to the success of this regimen You must take a large (8 oz.) glass of fluid at the specified times, drink only plain tea, strained fruit juice, soft drinks or water at the time indicated. No milk or cream!!!  Drink, one (1) glass of liquid every hour.


The Day Before The Examination

(Please continue to drink plenty of clear liquids throughout the evening.)

At 4:00 p.m. - Drink the entire contents of Magnesium Citrate (Green Bottle) over ice (may chase with 7-up or Sprite)

At 5:00 p.m. - Drink one (1) large glass of water, tea, or fruit juice. Take the first dose of Dulcolax tablet (yellow pill).

At 8:00 p.m. - Drink one (1) large glass of water, tea, or fruit juice. Take the second dose of Dulcolax tablet (yellow pill).

At 12:00 midnight - Nothing to eat or drink.


The Morning of The Examination

5:00 or 6:00 a.m. - Fleets enemas

Before coming to the clinic, Please follow diagram instructions on the side of the Fleets Enema box. Try to retain the fluid for at least 15 minutes. If the resulting bowel movement does not come back clear, use the second enema. For the best results, lie on your left side while trying to retain enema.

Important!!!

During the procedure, you will be sedated and may remain groggy for up to one hour afterwards. You must bring someone to drive you home.  Do not drive on the day of your procedure.

Remember – Do not eat or drink after midnight.
